It has a pyrenoid which is used for production of starch. A red eye spot is embedded on the anterior border of the chloroplast which responds to light stimulus

This is the first carbohydrate made in photosynthesis. Step 4 Through a series of intermediate reactions triose phosphate will build up to a six carbon sugar which is converted to starch for storage.
