Embden-Mayerhof-Parnas pathway

This is the major pathway in carbohydrate catabolism.

It is the oxidation of glucose to pyruvate. one glucose molecule (6C) is broken down down into two molecules of pyruvate (3C). This occurs on the cytoplasm in the absence of oxygen.

GLYCOLYSIS is the main source of of energy (ÀTP, NADH) in many prokaryotic cells as well as eukaryotic cells.
