Buffers

This is a compond which behave in such a way so as to resist changes in pH on dilution or addition of moderate amount of acid or alkaline. Sometimes two or more compounds react to form a buffer system.

Sodium bicarbonate act as a buffer by combining with free hydrogen ion. On the other hand, if the alkalinity is increased, it can react with the free hydroxyl ion to form carbonate ions and water. This Sodium bicarbonate can resist either a decrease or increase in pH by mopping up the hydrogen ion or hydroxyl ion.

problem of plant living in fresh water habitat

Buoyancy The density of fresh water is considerably less than that of the sea and such floatation is a greater problem for fresh water plankton. There is occasional flooding which submerges the plants.  The water lilies, water lettuce, water hyacinth are able to stay afloat because of the air spaces in the lower part of the leaves as well as in the skins and roots.
